President John Dramani Mahama is set to nominate individuals for critical security positions by the end of the week, as part of a broader strategy to address long-standing tensions in Bawku.
This move follows the recent nomination of ministers-designate for Finance, Energy and Green Transition, and the Office of the Attorney General and Justice.
During a visit to the Bawku Naba Palace on January 14, President Mahama addressed chiefs and residents of the Kusaug Traditional Area, stressing the importance of resolving the protracted crisis in the region. He underscored that his incoming appointees would be tasked with making Bawku a top priority.
“This week, we will finalize the appointments of the Minister for Defence, the Minister for Interior, the National Security Coordinator, the National Security Advisor, and the Director of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI),” the president announced. “Once these appointments are made, I will charge them to ensure that restoring peace and stability in Bawku is a central focus of their work.”
President Mahama acknowledged the role of security services in maintaining peace during Ghana’s recent elections, a feat that further solidifies the country’s status as a leading democracy in Africa. He also highlighted the ongoing threats to peace, both internally and externally, that require continuous vigilance.
“Internally, we face issues such as chieftaincy disputes and incidents of armed robbery. Externally, there are challenges along our northern borders. We must remain alert to safeguard the security of our nation,” he emphasized.
The president expressed optimism that the impending security appointments and accompanying measures would ease tensions and foster lasting harmony in Bawku.
