Pressure Mounts On Okyere Baafi To Apologize Over ‘Tribal’ Comment Against Eastern Regional Minister
Pressure is mounting on Michael Okyere Baafi, Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, to render an unqualified apology over what critics describe as a tribal remark directed at the Eastern Regional Minister.
The lawmaker, speaking on Accra-based Asaasepa Radio, reportedly stated that the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, who hails from Krobo land, cannot make decisions for the people of Koforidua.
The comment has sparked widespread condemnation, particularly from the Krobo bloc and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who have described the statement as divisive and unfortunate.
Nene ofei Tagbaja,Chief of Asesewa warned that Krobos will rise against the MP if he refuses to apologize.
Adding his voice to the criticism, the Eastern Regional Youth Organizer of the NDC, Richard Etornam Nyarko, condemned the remarks and called on the MP to apologize.
According to him, the Regional Minister, as the President’s representative in the region, has the full mandate to take decisions that affect all districts, including Koforidua, regardless of her ethnic background.
Meanwhile, there is a pending press conference on Monday by the Krobo bloc districts and municipalities in Eastern region -Upper Manya,Yilo Krobo, Lower Manya and Asuogyaman .
The growing backlash underscores concerns about tribal sentiments in political discourse, with stakeholders urging public officials to promote unity and national cohesion in their engagements.
