The Government has announced that the amended Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141) will take effect on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
The rollout was previously delayed by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to monitor global market trends and help stabilize domestic fuel prices.
The decision, made with input from the Ministries of Finance and Energy, is part of efforts to support economic stability and address funding needs in the energy sector.
The new law, outlined in Tax Information Circular No. 2025/004, updates the rates for the Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy (ESSDRL) on various petroleum products.
These changes aim to reduce funding gaps and repay debts within the energy sector.
The GRA has urged all businesses in the petroleum downstream sector to adjust their pricing structures before the law takes effect.
The Energy Sector Levies were first introduced to deal with financial shortfalls in the sector. This latest amendment is expected to raise more revenue to settle outstanding debts and invest in critical energy infrastructure.
Officials say they will continue to monitor the impact of the new levies and work closely with industry stakeholders to ensure a smooth rollout.
