The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has issued a three-day ultimatum to foreign nationals engaged in retail trading within the bustling spare parts hub, urging them to shut down their shops or face possible enforcement actions.
The Association argues that the operations of these foreign traders violate Ghana’s investment laws, disrupt fair market competition, and threaten the survival of local businesses.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, the Association’s General Secretary, Gifty Lovelock Naana Fianu, cautioned that if state authorities fail to act, the group is prepared to invoke Section 27(1) of the GIPC Act, 2013 (Act 865) and carry out citizens’ arrests.
“We are giving them three days to comply. Today, we will go around and speak with them respectfully so they understand our concerns. On Wednesday, we will meet with their leaders. If they refuse to listen, we will involve the authorities,” she stated.
According to her, the Association plans to notify the police, allow a five-day grace period, and inform all relevant institutions before taking further steps.
Some affected foreign traders have already begun closing their shops ahead of the deadline.
