The Member of Parliament for the Ahafo Ano South East Constituency, Hon. Yakubu Mohammed, has reiterated his strong commitment to combating illegal mining (galamsey) in his constituency.
Speaking to the media, Hon. Yakubu Mohammed revealed that illegal mining activities were widespread even before he became a Member of Parliament. As a result, he personally took the initiative, from the beginning of his tenure, to collaborate closely with the Minerals Commission Director in the area to clamp down on galamsey operations.
He explained that whenever illegal mining activities are detected in the constituency, he promptly alerts the Minerals Commission to work together with the Police to arrest the perpetrators and drive them out of the area.
Recounting an incident that occurred last Monday, Hon. Mohammed said that during a sod-cutting ceremony in the Ahafo Ano South East District, he and the District Chief Executive (DCE) decided to tour some communities. They visited Pokuase, specifically Kwame Antwi Krom, where borehole projects were underway. While they were parked and standing by their vehicle, four young men approached him. Upon questioning them about their activities, they claimed they had been working in the bush. Given that the area is largely a cabbage-farming community, he initially assumed they were farmers, only to later realize that they were involved in illegal mining activities.

The MP further appealed to residents to exercise caution as the Christmas festivities approach. He expressed concern over the increasing number of road accidents recorded earlier and urged drivers to be careful on the roads. He also warned that robbery cases tend to rise during festive seasons and advised the public to remain vigilant at all times.
Additionally, Hon. Mohammed cautioned against drinking and driving and advised revelers, especially the youth, to be careful when socializing, as there is a risk of drinks being tampered with. He emphasized the need for young people to moderate their celebrations during the festive period.
He assured constituents that the government remains committed to improving their livelihoods and encouraged them to take advantage of available opportunities while prioritizing their safety.
Hon. Yakubu Mohammed expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Ahafo Ano South East for the confidence they have reposed in him, noting that their support is the reason he is in Parliament today. He outlined several development projects being undertaken through the Constituency Common Fund, stressing that the fund belongs to the people.
According to him, ongoing projects include the construction of two community fields, ten boreholes across the district, three-unit classroom blocks for Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools, as well as a CHPS compound with nurses’ quarters. He commended the DCE for his dedication and hard work, adding that they continue to work closely together to bring development to the constituency.
