Mr. Paul Asumaku has called on the government to show strong political will in the fight against illegal mining, warning that failure to act decisively could result in increased bloodshed in the future.
He said the signs of danger are already visible, citing incidents where armed illegal miners have attacked and shot a member of NAIMOS mandated to protect the forest reserves, while one of the assailant got killed.
While contributing to discussions on Bryt FM’s Adekyee mu Nsem, Mr. Asumaku urged the government to consider declaring a state of emergency if it is serious about ending galamsay and restoring safety to affected areas.
Although he clarified that he is not a prophet, he described the current situation as frightening and said the country could face more severe consequences if urgent steps are not taken.
Mr. Asumaku also revealed that during a previous meeting with the President of Ghana, the President outlined plans to empower security agencies, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). However, he emphasized that security agencies alone cannot win the battle against illegal mining.
He concluded by calling on the government, traditional leaders, civil society organisations, and citizens to unite to protect Ghana’s forests and lands before the situation escalates further.
