Police officers stationed at the Tinkong checkpoint on Koforidua to Mamfe Highway in the Eastern Region have arrested a female suspected drug dealer after intercepting large quantities of substances believed to be cannabis.
The arrest occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the suspect was traveling in a Toyota Voxy commercial vehicle from Koforidua to Accra.
The Police officers on checkpoint duty —comprising three males and two females—conducted a thorough inspection of the vehicle and passengers’ luggage.
During the search, an ecoland bag found at the back of the vehicle was discovered to contain large quantities of wrapped substances suspected to be narcotics, concealed beneath clothing.
The woman was identified as the owner of the bag and was immediately arrested. She reportedly admitted ownership of both the bag and its contents.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect was smuggling the suspected cannabis from the Krobo area to Accra for sale. She is said to have confessed to engaging in the illicit drug trade for some time.
A journalist, Obed Kojo Ansah, who was caught in traffic at the checkpoint and witnessed the incident, confirmed that both the suspect and the exhibits were taken to the Eastern Regional Police Headquarters for further investigations.
Police say investigations are ongoing.
