Former member of parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has voiced dissatisfaction about the protracted hold-up in the Ashanti Region’s Afari Military Hospital’s full operation, characterizing it as a lost chance to enhance the nation’s healthcare system.
Shortly after donating a pickup truck and fifteen motorcycles to the Ghana Police Service at the Accra Regional Police Headquarters on Tuesday, June 16, the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer candidate publicly denounced successive administrations, including the NPP government in which he held the position of Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee.
Kennedy Agyapong stated that, considering the substantial investment made in its construction, the hospital project—which was intended to be a major healthcare center serving both military troops and civilians—should have been finished and functioning years ago.
Thinking back on the project’s history, he pointed out that while significant building was carried out under a later National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, the hospital’s foundation was established under the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
He claims that although though the NPP inherited the project when it took office, during its eight years in power, the party did not take the required actions to guarantee its completion and operationalization.
“This hospital was started by President John Agyekum Kufuor. The locations and all those things. NDC came to start it, and when we came, I am NPP, and I am telling you the gospel truth. I was the chairman for Defence and Interior, and we didn’t do anything.
“When we decided to go and inspect Afari, they stopped us. I heard somebody saying the Afari Hospital has been there for 15 months, but we were there for eight years and didn’t do it.” He added.
