Mr. Asante Gyebi, Deputy Director of Policy at the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, has expressed concern over the misuse of unregistered and improperly monitored firearms across the country.
Speaking on Bryt FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem programme, he revealed that some individuals who possess firearms use them without adhering to the regulations governing gun ownership, a situation he described as worrying.
To address the challenge, Mr. Gyebi disclosed that firearm owners were given a three-month period to submit their weapons to the Police Service for inspection and verification. The exercise, he explained, is aimed at ensuring that all firearms in circulation meet the required standards and are properly documented.
He stated that the inspection process will enable security agencies to identify legally owned firearms, remove defective weapons from circulation, and strengthen efforts to combat the illegal use of guns.
Mr. Gyebi urged all firearm owners to cooperate with the authorities by complying with registration and inspection requirements. He noted that proper regulation of firearms is essential for enhancing public safety and reducing gun-related incidents in the country.
The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons continues to intensify public education on responsible gun ownership and the need for citizens to comply with existing firearms laws.
