The Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology, Hon. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has outlined measures to strengthen environmental protection through improved waste management, climate action and tighter monitoring of hazardous chemicals entering the country.
She said Ghana would explore opportunities in carbon dioxide trading through the development of the carbon market, with support from the World Bank to address the effects of climate change.
Hon. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, who is also the Member of Parliament for Klottey-Korle Constituency made this known when she appeared before the Appointments Committee for vetting in Parliament.
She also highlighted the need to improve sewage and solid waste management, including exploring ways to convert plastic waste into fuel.
The Minister-designate further pledged to strengthen monitoring at the country’s various ports of entry to track chemicals brought into Ghana. She said underground water, soil and farms would also be monitored to assess the spread of mercury.
Commenting on Artificial Intelligence (AI), she stressed the need for appropriate legislative safeguards and human oversight to promote transparency and accountability in the activities of public agencies.
