The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council has joined calls demanding an unqualified apology from the Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC, John Dramani Mahama to the people of Akyem.
He said Chiefs in all three paramountcies in Akyem – Kotoku, Bosome, and Abuakwa will advise them if John Mahama fails to apologize within 72 hours.
John Mahama’s sharing of an article by Bolga Central Member of Parliament Isaac Adongo on Facebook in which he labeled some individuals in government connected to the controversial “Agayapa deal” as ‘Sakawa-Akyem boys’ has sparked uproar among Chiefs and People of Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area.
The angry chiefs and indigenous on Wednesday staged a massive demonstration at Asamankese to express their discontent over the tribal comment.
The Demonstrators clad in red and black dresses wearing armband and headgear hoisted several placards with various inscriptions such as “divisive NDC, JM you have lost our respect, Name-calling Akyems can do worse please, NDC and JM where are your Policies, we Akyems will no longer stand for this, Let’s reject JM and NDC and its bigotry “.
Okogyeaman Apegya Ofori V – Amantuomiensahene of Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area who led some Chiefs to represent Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council poured libation after the demonstration to pray to the gods over an attempt to denigrate Akyems.
Archibald Ntiri-Acquah the lead Convener of the demonstration recounted a number of derogatory tribal comments made by some leaders of the NDC against the people of Akyem, Stating that the NDC is fond of inciting tribes against the Akyems.
He said failure by John Mahama to apologize for means the NDC will not be entertained on Akyem land including all the three paramountcies.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the 2020 campaign team of the National Democratic Congress, James Agyenim Boateng, has dismissed calls for the flagbearer of the party, John Mahama, to apologize for sharing an article that described some members within government as a ‘sakawa’ group.
Mr. Agyenim Boateng in an interview on Starr News said attempts to deliberately misinterpret the statement are mischievous and unfortunate adding that John Mahama will not apologize.
