The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has ended a two-day successful training program on Data interpretation and communication.
The training started on Thursday 14th to 16th October 2020 at Dodowa Forest Hotel in Shai Osudoku District Assembly in Accra.
In all, twenty-five selected journalists including, Print, Online, Radio, and Television across Eastern, Volta, Central, Western, and Greater Accra region were taken through how to interpret Data.
The facilitators from GSS/UNDP trained the aforementioned journalists on how to effectively communicate the results of data analysis.
According to UNDP/GSS, most journalists sometimes misinterpret and misrepresent data out of context, hence the need to train them to improve their knowledge on Data interpretation.
The head of communication for UNDP, Praise Nutakor said, it is increasingly becoming important that journalists continue to improve their knowledge and understanding of statistics, particularly quantitative data to be able to interpret and present these in simple and straight forward terms to facilitate understanding especially among non-technical experts.
She said at the end of the training, journalists have been able to understand the basic statistical methods and terminologies and interpret statistical data within the context and disseminate it effectively.
Prof. Samuel K Annim, Government Statistician urged journalists to limit the use of statistical terminologies when reporting of statistics and data if possible, for the benefit of non-technical experts.
The participants commended UNDP/GSS for such an opportunity which according to them has broadened their scope with regards to Data interpretation and communication.
