A 15-year-old girl is in trouble after a group of Sextortionists operating in Koforidua lured to get her nude pictures.
Mybrytfmonline.com has gathered that the suspects operate using foreign numbers to chat their victims under the guise of living abroad and wanting to marry them.
While the romantic relationship between them and their victims continue, they demand to sext.
After receiving nude pictures from their victims, they use it to blackmail their victims.
On Wednesday, October 28, 2020, a teenage girl at Densuano, a suburb of Koforidua was seen dejected after the suspects threaten to leak her nude pictures on the internet if she fails to pay Ghc500 to them.
The girl managed to snatch the mobile phone which contained the said nude pictures from one of the suspects and run away with it but could not delete due to the locked password on the phone.
The suspects trailed and attacked the girl, seized a motorbike she was seating on and demanded that the phone is given back to them before the motorbike will be released to the owner.
After hours of back and forth between the family of the victim and the suspects, the phone was given back to the suspects amidst threats. The motorbike was subsequently released to the owner.
The girl still feels unsafe as the suspects could leak her nude images which she claims was sent by her boyfriend to the suspects without her consent.
Increasing incidents of Sextortion in E/R
The Eastern Regional Commanding officer of Domestic Violence and Victims Supports Unit (DOVVSU) Florence Anamang has revealed that incidents of sharing nude pictures and Sextortion are on the rise in the Eastern Region.
According to her most of the victims are women and girls who are lured by their abusers who pretend to be in love with them to share their nude pictures while others engage in obscene video calls on social media platforms.
“Of late what is the trend is that the ladies naked themselves, take a picture and send them .Their abusers later use the nude pictures to intimidate and threaten and extort from them”.
As Ghana joined the rest of the World to mark International Day of the Girl Child on 11 October, to amplify the voices and rights of girls everywhere, stakeholders called on the government of Ghana to facilitate the enactment of an Anti-Cyber bullying Law to curb the growing phenomenon of Cyber violence against women and girls in particular.
At a Durbar held in Dawu -Akuapem in the Eastern Region organized by Plan International Ghana to mark the day, Child Right Advocates expressed worry over increasing cyber violence against women and girls in Ghana with a call on the Government to facilitate the enactment of Anti-Cyber bullying Law to protect this vulnerable group.
According to them, increasing online sexual violence against women and girls threaten their full participation in internet usage and infringes their fundamental human right.
