The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community in Ghana has condemned comments made by the Minister-designate for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Sarfo for expressing her disapproval over the legalization of homosexuality in the country.
The Minister-designate said during her vetting by the Appointment Committee of Parliament that, not only does the Ghanaian culture frown upon LGBTQ activities, the laws governing the State make it criminal.
“The issue of LGBTQI is an issue that when mentioned creates some controversy but what I want to say is that our laws are clear on such practices. It makes it criminal.
“On the issue of its criminality, it is non-negotiable on the issue of cultural acceptance and norms too. These practices are also frowned upon,” she stated emphatically.
But reacting to this comment, the LBGTQ community has described it as weaponizing and dehumanizing against LGBTQ people.
“Here we go again! Weaponizing LGBTQ by some Ghanaian politicians as a tool to discredit, insult, and dehumanize LGBTQ Ghanaians.
Playing the populist rhetoric and appealing to people’s worst prejudices.
Human Rights Belongs to All. Freedom and Justice to all not some Ghanaians”
Homosexuality issues have risen again following the opening of the LGBTQ office in Ghana this month with the support of the European Union.
Many religious and civil society groups are up in arms against the initiative vowing to resist the attempt to legalize same-sex marriage in the country.
