A coalition of South Sudan’s opposition parties and rebel groups still fighting the government has warned that the country is on the verge of collapse.
The Opposition Movements Alliance say the country has “become ungovernable” and is “at the brink of disintegrating” during the tenure of the current unity government.
“South Sudan is awash with weapons and is engulfed in unprecedented violence and lawlessness,” the coalition said in a statement.
They accused President Salva Kiir’s government of failing to fully implement a peace agreement signed in 2018.
The government has not yet commented on their statement.
The development comes a week after the US announced it was ending its assistance for monitoring the peace process due to the country’s failure to meet specified milestones.
The opposition group is now calling for stakeholders in South Sudan for talks on a new dispensation before February next year when the country is expected to hold elections.
They have urged the East African Community, the regional group Igad, the African Union, UN and others to support their call for talks.
