The Executive Director of ASEPA, Mr. Thompson Mensah is inciting all youth groups in the Eastern Region to affect citizen arrest on National Identification Authority Officers, seize their equipment and hand them over to any nearby police station.
According to him, there is one angle to the recalcitrance by the NIA that the Citizens are failing to look at and which is the legal right to affect Citizens Arrest.
He said that in the wake of the coronavirus scare that has engulfed the world has compelled several Professional bodies like the Ghana Medical Association, NUGS, CHRAJ, CSOs, etc over the past few days have intensified calls to the NIA to suspend its registration in the Eastern Region but little has been done to heed to those important calls.
A press statement issued by the Executive Director, Mr. Mensah said: “We are by this statement, announcing to the good people of the Eastern Region especially the youth to activate their rights and effect Citizens arrest of all NIA officers at all NIA Registration Centers, Size all Equipments and Registration Materials and transport them together with the NIA officers to the nearby Police Station”.
That he said must do with immediate effect, adding that, it is legally recognized by the laws of the land in critical situations such as this one when the lives of the People are being endangered by the actions of these NIA officers.
He said the go up have activated several lawyers who are willing and ready to defend anyone in Court should the State decides to flout its own directive and charge anybody for subjecting these NIA officers to Citizens arrest.
The president, Man Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday ordered the suspension of all schools, Churches and other public gatherings as part of measures to curb the deadly spread of the coronavirus.
However, the National Identification Authority’s mass registration in the Eastern Region is still ongoing despite several calls by health professionals and other groups call to suspend the exercise.
Ghana as at Friday, March 20, 2020, has recorded 16 positive cases of the coronavirus with more suspected cases yet to be tested.
