Ghana’s wheelchair softball delegation has returned home with the trophy after their participation in the just ended softball competition in Crestwood, USA and called on the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon Mustapha Ussif at his Office to formally present the trophy and medals they won to him and to give him a report on what transpired at the event.
The competition has helped to shape Ghana’s team and boosted their chances of winning medals in the upcoming first African Para Games in Ghana which will be a precursor to the main 13th African Games “Accra2023”.
The African para Games is scheduled to begin from the 3rd – 12th September, 2023.
This is the first time Ghana has participated in the wheelchair softball world series held in Crestwood, Chicago USA and was held from 3rd -5th August, 2023.
Ghana’s continent of seven (7) men was led by the Deputy Director General of the National sports Authority Mr. Majeed Bawa.
The team was joined by 3 other players who were domiciled in USA. 15 countries including USA, the Netherlands, Japan and other clubs in USA participated in the World Series and the overall best team was Japan.
Ghana placed 2nd in its category and also had one individual gold and silver medals.
Ghana also received a donation of 4 wheelchairs, 50 softballs and 10 bats.
The leader of the delegation, Mr. Osei Mensah upon handing over the trophy to the Minister noted that they were extremely grateful to the him for his support to the team from the beginning of preparations and throughout the competition.
Mr. Majeed Bawa, who was part of Ghana’s delegation also expressed his sincere appreciation to the Minister on behalf of the team for giving them all the support they needed and noted that they had smooth preparations and a good competition.
For his part, the Minister for Youth and Sports, congratulated the team for making mother Ghana proud and lifting high the flag of Ghana in the U.S.A and reiterated government’s support and attention to all sporting disciplines.
He intimated that, government will continue to provide support to all sporting disciplines adding that it was a good exercise for the team to embark on the trip and charged them to leverage on the African Games to improve on their performances for subsequent competitions.
