Sierra Leone’s parliament has approved a new law banning child marriage.
International NGO Save the Children called it a “historic” move.
The new law makes marrying girls under the age of 18 a criminal offence that comes with a jail sentence of up to 15 years, and a fine equivalent to $2,000.
According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), around one-third of all young women in Sierra Leone are married before their 18th birthday.
The bill has yet to be signed into law by President Julius Maada Bio.
