The 5th edition of the Energy Commission’s Renewable Energy Challenge for senior high schools saw Saint Rose’s senior high school emerged as winners in the Eastern Regional championship.
Students from Saint Rose’s senior high school at Akwatia in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region arrived at the eleventh hour of the program but took the bragging right as winners.
The renewable energy challenge is an initiative by the Energy commission of Ghana that focuses on senior high schools to critically think and develop solutions to environmental issues.
The challenge seeks to whip up the interest of students in energy, science, research, innovation and also help students develop ideas to solving societal challenges.
This is done under the mandate of Energy Commission’s Act 2011, Act 832, which seeks to promote the development and efficient use of renewable energy through public education, training and regulation of entrepreneurship in the energy sector.
This year’s challenge was themed: “Application of Renewable Energy Technologies in Solving Land Degradation and Water Pollution“
Ten (10) out of seventeen (17) schools were shortlisted for this year’s challenge in the Eastern Region.
However, only eight (8) showed up as the remaining two (2) could not make it due to unknown circumstances.
The project presented by St Rose’s was a very simple, smart and easy device that uses solar power to collect plastic and other waste materials from water bodies.
They Water Waste Collector comes with solar panels connected to a battery to store energy in place of solar power when there’s no sunlight.
It also utilizes turbines that keeps rotating when placed in any water body causing the waste materials in it to move and be collected by a conveyor belt after which the waste materials are deposited into a collection chamber for recycling.
According to them, the project when commercialize will be beneficial to Ghanaians as it helps to curb the menace of plastic pollution in water bodies.
