The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to resign over the Cedi’s depreciation.
At the end of his tour of the Bono East Region, Mahama spoke at a campaign rally in Nkwabeng, a town in the Nkwanta South District, and highlighted his dissatisfaction with the way the government was handling the economy.
He notably criticized the Cedi’s sharp collapse, which has seen it drop from over GH¢15 to only one US dollar.
Mahama highlighted variations in inflation and exchange rates as he compared the status of the economy now with that of his era.
He emphasized that Ghanaians’ cost of living has increased dramatically as a result of the current government’s depreciation of the Cedi, heavily impacting both consumers and companies.
The former president contended that President Akufo-Addo would have resigned at the beginning of the Cedi’s sharp slide if he and his administration had been genuinely accountable and concerned for the wellbeing of Ghanaians.
“During the Atta Mills’ administration, the exchange rate was GH¢2 to a dollar. When he took office, it was GH¢4 to a dollar. After nearly 8 years in power, the exchange rate has now risen to GH¢¢16 to a dollar.
“President Akufo-Addo should have resigned long ago when the Cedi depreciated to GH¢16 per dollar. It is difficult to see how GH¢16 to a dollar can be considered better than GH¢4 to a dollar.
