The Ghana Armed Forces, Police Service, National Fire Service, Prisons Service, Customs, and other relevant agencies have embarked on a peace walk ahead of the December 7 polls.
The peace walk by the securities agencies was to demonstrate the commitment to peaceful elections and ensuring peace and order before, during, and after the polls.
The Eastern Regional Police Commander, who doubles as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mr. Emmanuel Twumasi-Ankrah, explained that the Eastern Regional Security Taskforce led by Dr. Akufo Dampare is ready to deliver its mandate by providing adequate security for the 2024 general elections.
Mr. Twumasi-Ankrah indicated that the security services have put measures in place for peaceful elections, adding that they are well prepared mentally, physically, and emotionally for violence-free elections.
Speaking to the press after the peace walk at the regional police headquarters, Mr. Twumasi-Ankrah underscored the need to uphold the importance of peace and coexistence ahead of the few days for the polls.
He urged the members of the security service to work diligently on the day of the elections. He said that the taskforce is committed to enforcing law and order in the country before, during, and after the general elections.
Director of Army Operations at the Ghana Army Headquarters, Colonel (Col) Emmanuel Gyadu, said that the military will not partake directly in the elections but will be standby on the election day.
He highlighted that the security agencies under the Ministry of Interior will be fully discharged on the day of the election to maintain peace at the election’s centers against any threat envisaged in the country.
Col. Emmanuel Gyadu entreated that the soldiers will be at their various barracks to monitor the elections.
“When the situation gets out of hand of the police, that is when they will call us through a well-established channel. So, no soldier sitting anywhere can take his weapon to intervene in confusions on the election day,’’ Col. Emmanuel Gyadu disclosed.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Seth Kwame Acheampong, on his part commended the security agencies for their preparedness for the polls. He called on Ghanaians to demonstrate peace during and after the elections.
