The state of Ghana’s economy following the recent general elections has sparked heated discussions among analysts and political observers. Dr. Sammy Ayeh, NDC Spokesperson on Youth Development , has criticized the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), arguing that the party has failed to learn from past mistakes in economic management.
Speaking at a public forum on Wednesday morning, Dr. Ayeh highlighted the challenges facing the nation, including rising inflation, a depreciating cedi, and mounting national debt.
According to him, these issues are symptomatic of a larger failure by the NPP to implement sustainable economic policies, especially in the wake of elections, when political promises often overshadow fiscal discipline.
“The NPP seems to repeat the same cycle of short-term populist policies after every election. Instead of addressing structural issues in the economy, they prioritize programs that create temporary relief but exacerbate long-term vulnerabilities”, he stated.
Dr. Ayeh also pointed to Ghana’s reliance on external borrowing and its impact on the country’s economic sovereignty. He emphasized the need for a shift toward policies that promote local production, reduce dependence on imports, and ensure inclusive growth for all citizens.
While the NPP has touted its flagship programs, such as the Free SHS initiative, as evidence of its commitment to development, critics like Dr. Ayeh argue that these efforts are undermined by poor economic planning and execution.
