Accra, February 11- President John Dramani Mahama has instructed Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to take immediate steps to address a significant funding shortfall caused by the suspension of USAID’s international funding program.
The President expressed deep concern over the estimated $156 million gap, highlighting the urgency of finding alternative financial solutions.
A particularly pressing issue is the projected $78.2 million deficit, which threatens essential health interventions, including malaria prevention, maternal and child health, family planning, reproductive health, nutrition, and HIV/AIDS programs.
These programs rely on the availability of antiretroviral drugs, testing, and prevention services, all of which could be severely impacted.
To mitigate the potential negative consequences of the funding disruption, President Mahama has directed that priority be given to sustaining these critical healthcare initiatives.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, confirmed the directive in an official statement, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring that vital health services remain unaffected.
