Accra, Ghana – February 13, 2025
The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) has declared a nationwide strike, set to begin on Thursday, February 20, 2025. The decision follows concerns over the appointment of Mr. Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of Births and Deaths, whom the association describes as a “politically exposed person.”
In a statement issued by CLOGSAG’s National Executive Council (NEC), the association expressed discontent with the appointment, stating that such political placements undermine the neutrality of the civil and local government services. The NEC convened on February 11, 2025, to deliberate on the issue, ultimately deciding that if Mr. Botchway assumed office, the association would have no choice but to take industrial action.
Mr. Botchway officially took office on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. As a result, CLOGSAG has instructed its members to stay at home beginning February 20, 2025, until further notice.
Signed by the association’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Isaac Bampoe Addo, the statement emphasizes CLOGSAG’s commitment to protecting the integrity of the civil service. The association is calling on all its members nationwide to adhere to the directive.
CLOGSAG, a major union representing civil and local government staff, has historically resisted the appointment of politically affiliated individuals to key civil service roles. The latest move signals yet another standoff between the government and the association over the neutrality of public service appointments.
Government officials are yet to respond to the announcement.
