The New Juaben Table Tennis Club on Monday, 17th March 2025, paid a courtesy call on the Eastern Regional Minister, Mrs Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, at her office to congratulate her on her appointment and discuss issues affecting the club’s growth.
Led by Mr Ernest Wiredu, Director of Golden Cherry Real Estate, and Mr Felix Adjetey Sowah, Club Chairman, the delegation briefed the minister on the club’s contributions to sports development in the region and the country at large. They also presented to her the Dedication and Valour Award, which they won at the 49th Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards held at the Accra International Conference Centre in January 2025. The award recognised their dedication to table tennis and their contribution to the sport’s growth in Ghana.
The club highlighted its position as the hub of Ghana table tennis, with a strong track record of nurturing top talents. Notably, they shared their historic achievement of producing a male player who secured Ghana’s first-ever Olympic qualification in the men’s team category.
Despite these milestones, the team raised concerns over key challenges, particularly the lack of a dedicated vehicle for competitions and other essential club activities, which they said hampers their participation in national and regional events.
In response, Mrs Awatey commended the club for its achievements and assured them of her commitment to supporting the development of table tennis in the region. She reiterated her strong passion for sports development across all disciplines, emphasising that every sporting activity deserves the necessary attention and investment.
She noted that sports play a crucial role in youth empowerment, community development, and national recognition, and pledged to work towards creating a more supportive environment for athletes.
She further encouraged the club to continue nurturing young talents and positioning the Eastern Region as a stronghold for table tennis in Ghana. She expressed optimism about working closely with relevant stakeholders to explore solutions that will enhance the club’s capacity and ensure its continued success on both national and international platforms.
The visit reaffirmed the minister’s dedication to promoting sports across the region and strengthening sports.
