In a concerted effort to combat illegal water connections, Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Ashanti South Region, in collaboration with the Kumasi Central Police Service, has arrested five individuals suspected of illegally tapping into the water supply.
The arrests, carried out earlier on Wednesday, mark a significant step in GWL’s ongoing campaign to reduce commercial losses and ensure fair access to water resources for all residents.
The five individuals were apprehended after failing to respond to surcharges issued for their alleged illegal connections, which totaled Gh₵31,803.97. While three of the suspects have since paid their dues, amounting to Gh₵11,515.00, the remaining two are currently in police custody, awaiting further processing if payment conditions are not met.
GWL officials have expressed growing concern over the prevalence of illegal connections and water siphoning in the Ashanti Region, citing it as a major contributor to Non-Revenue Water (NRW).
NRW refers to water that is produced but cannot be accounted for, whether through leaks, theft, or other means. The company estimates that illegal activities are costing them significant revenue, hindering their ability to maintain and improve water infrastructure.
“Illegal connection and siphoning of water have become rampant in the Ashanti Region, contributing significantly to Non-Revenue Water for the region.”
Management’s dedication to fostering relationships with the police and the media will help to eradicate this menace.”
Acting Regional Chief Manager, Madam Innocentia Kuupiel, lauded the efforts of the Central Police administration for their assistance in making the operation a success. She expressed optimism that the crackdown would serve as a deterrent to others considering engaging in illegal water connections.
The arrests took place in several locations across the region, including Denyame, Dakodwom, Kwadaso Estate, and Santasi Apire.
GWL is urging residents of the Ashanti Region to play an active role in combating illegal connections by reporting any suspicious activity to the company. A dedicated hotline, 055 677 9028, has been established for this purpose, and callers are assured that their information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. GWL is also offering a reward for verified reports of illegal connections.
“Ghana Water Limited is committed to meeting the demands of its customers and entreats that all and sundry should join the fight against Illegal Water Connections, as such acts deny the company the resources to enhance operations,” the spokesperson added.
The company has vowed to continue working closely with the police service to eradicate illegal connections throughout the Ashanti Region. This latest operation sends a clear message that GWL is taking the issue seriously and is committed to protecting its resources and ensuring a reliable water supply for all.
