On September 11, 2025, on Bryt FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem hosted by Kwamina Sam Binny, Environmental and Health Consultant, Dr. David Agbey, shared his views on small-scale mining in Ghana.
The host highlighted that while countries like Australia also engage in small-scale mining, their activities do not cause the same level of environmental degradation witnessed in Ghana. As a result, the President has directed that some Ghanaian personnel be sent to Australia for proper training in sustainable mining practices.
Dr. Agbey emphasized the importance of continuous learning in every profession. He explained that whether one is a carpenter, doctor, or miner, specialized training is essential for growth and efficiency.
He further noted that beyond academic degrees, seminars, conferences, and international training opportunities provide broader knowledge that improves professional standards.
He also mentioned that even media practitioners attend training programs in institutions such as Winneba and sometimes travel abroad to enhance their skills.
According to him, new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) are also contributing significantly to making learning and work processes easier, and dismissing its relevance is misleading.
Dr. Agbey concluded by stressing that many Ghanaians already hold degrees, diplomas, and HNDs in mining, and therefore, the country must focus on improving mining practices rather than relying solely on documentation and reports.
He urged for the right systems to be put in place to ensure responsible and sustainable mining.
