A victim of the Kyebi Zongo shooting incident in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region has undergone surgery at the Kyebi Government Hospital.
The shooting incident occurred on Saturday, July 11, 2026, during an operation involving armed military personnel and suspected illegal miners at Kyebi Zongo.
The operation, which residents say was conducted by personnel reportedly deployed by Extra Gold Mining Company to remove illegal miners from its concession, resulted in 41-year-old Sumaila Ibrahim, popularly known as Agono, sustaining a gunshot wound to the leg.
Mr. Ibrahim has since undergone surgery and is being monitored at the VIP Emergency Ward of the Kyebi Government Hospital.
Another person, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, is also on admission at the facility after sustaining minor injuries.
Leaders of the Kyebi Zongo Youth maintain that Mr. Ibrahim was not part of the group confronting the soldiers but was among community leaders who attempted to calm the situation when he was shot after allegedly crossing a warning line created by the military personnel.
Residents claim the confrontation started after the soldiers arrived with a tipper truck and allegedly attempted to seize gold-bearing material collected by local miners.
The youth further insist that the area had been earmarked for a community cooperative mining project, with processes towards its establishment ongoing.
According to youth leaders, the soldiers allegedly demanded GH¢100,000 to prevent them from invading the mining site, with GH¢80,000 subsequently mobilised and paid before the operation was carried out.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and the Ghana Armed Forces is yet to respond to the claims.
The Ghana Police Service in Kyebi has commenced investigations into the incident to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and verify the allegations.
The Ghana Armed Forces and Extra Gold Mining Company have not yet publicly responded to the accusations.
