Zamora, Spain – July 3, 2025
Liverpool forward and Portuguese international Diogo Jota has died at the age of 28 following a car crash in northern Spain. His younger brother, André Silva, 26, also died in the accident.
The fatal crash occurred on the A-52 highway in the province of Zamora, near the town of Cernadilla. According to emergency services, the Lamborghini the brothers were traveling in veered off the road, reportedly after a tyre blowout while overtaking. The car crashed and burst into flames.
Emergency responders confirmed both men were dead at the scene.
Jota’s tragic death comes just two weeks after marrying his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, with whom he shares three children. In a recent interview, he had described himself as “the luckiest man in the world.”
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed the news in a statement by its president, Pedro Proença.
“Diogo Jota was not only an extraordinary player with nearly 50 caps for the national team, but also a person of immense joy and character, respected by teammates and opponents alike. His passing and that of André Silva is a devastating loss for Portuguese football,” Proença said.
The FPF has requested a minute’s silence before Portugal’s next match at the UEFA Women’s European Championship, in honor of the two players.
Jota was a key figure for both Liverpool FC and Portugal, helping his teams win multiple titles, including the Premier League and UEFA Nations League.
