The Minority Leader and MP for Effutu Constituency, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has expressed concerns about the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to re-run elections at some polling stations in the Ablekuman North Constituency due to disputed election results.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Afenyo-Markin questioned the EC’s integrity, citing a surprise announcement to re-run elections on July 11, 2025. He noted that the EC had previously issued a public statement indicating that only three polling stations were left to finalize the collation process, allowing for a declaration of results.
Afenyo-Markin highlighted that the EC had requested police protection to finalize the collation, and during a parliamentary session, the Deputy Chair of the EC, Dr. Bossman Asare, stated that security protection was all that was needed to complete the process. Afenyo-Markin asked what had changed to warrant the decision to re-run elections.
He emphasized the importance of managing democracy carefully and pointed out that some MPs, including Mike Ocquaye Jnr (MP for Dome Kwabenya), were in Parliament because the EC had relied on tally cards to complete the collation process. Afenyo-Markin questioned the fairness and justice of the EC’s decision, suggesting that recent public comments by senior politicians may be influencing the EC’s actions.
