Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a key aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a stern warning to the Ghana Police Service and President John Dramani Mahama, calling for immediate action following violent disturbances during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.
Appearing on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, July 16, Aboagye expressed deep frustration over what he described as a lack of accountability and urgency from authorities six days after the incident. He vowed to propose the establishment of a “Self-Protection Committee” within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) if firm measures are not taken by Saturday, July 20.
“It has been six days. If nothing is done, the only thing left for the NPP to do is to set up a Self-Protection Committee on Saturday—and I am going to insist,” he declared.
Aboagye explained that the proposal will be formally introduced at the NPP’s upcoming conference scheduled for July 20, which is expected to focus on internal reforms.
“Saturday is a conference for reforms. I will raise my hand and recommend that while we have a legal and elections committee, we need a Self-Protection Committee. Because if the NPP doesn’t do that, I will not go out there to any polling station,” he stated.
He emphasized that the proposed committee would serve as a protective mechanism for NPP members and voters in areas prone to violence, especially where police presence has been insufficient.
“The idea is that if we find ourselves in a chaotic situation, there should be 10 to 20 NPP members present to protect us—because the police cannot do it. If nothing is done between now and Saturday, I will recommend this committee, whose mandate will be to ensure the safety of NPP functionaries and citizens at polling stations,” he added.
His comments follow violent scenes at the St. Peter’s polling center during the Ablekuma North rerun on Friday, July 11, where a group of unidentified men described as “macho men” stormed the premises, disrupted voting, and assaulted several individuals.
