Leading figures in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have accused the government of political persecution in relation to Kwame Baffoe’s arrest and imprisonment, also known as Abronye DC.
A circuit court in Accra remanded NPP Bono Regional Chairman Abronye into police custody on Friday. On September 12, 2025, he is scheduled to make another court appearance.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a former presidential staffer, responded to the development by calling the action ineffective.
“Whoever is advising this NDC govt on these political arrests surely is an enemy to the NDC.
“That you believe persecuting someone like Abronye can actually shut him up? Intimidate others?? In 2025? Lol. He will get even louder after this,” Aboagye wrote in a social post.
Abronye’s legal team was similarly taken aback by the court’s ruling.
Daniel Martey, his attorney, told reporters outside the courtroom that a remand was not necessary due to the allegations.
“The accused person was arraigned before the court, and it appears the prosecution just wanted him to be remanded.
“For whatever reason, you gave us an invite, we have responded to the invite, and the charges leveled against my client in court were just misdemeanors, and in law you will know that there are categories of offences, and misdemeanor is the basic one, and that shouldn’t be the basis why an accused person should be remanded,” he explained.
Abronye is anticipated to return to court when the matter resumes later this month.
