The Energy Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing laws that ensure all electrical appliances imported into Ghana meet the Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS). This move aims to curb the influx of fake and second-hand appliances that contribute to excessive energy consumption.
Speaking at a media engagement in Koforidua on October 7, 2025, at the NASCO Hotel, Mr. Samuel Frempong, Senior Public Affairs Officer at the Energy Commission, expressed serious concern about the continuous importation of unregistered appliances. He emphasized that the law was enacted to promote energy efficiency and protect consumers from substandard products.
Mr. Frempong explained that the. Commission is working through the media to educate importers and retailers on the need to ensure all appliances are registered and approved before importation or sale. He cautioned that any appliance without the Energy Commission’s label is considered fake and therefore banned from use in Ghana.
He further warned that individuals or companies who attempt to flout the regulation will face severe penalties. Mr. Frempong urged importers and retailers to comply with the law by registering their appliances and selling only those with approved energy labels to help conserve energy and protect the environment.
