The National President of the Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana, Nana Oboadie Boateng Bonsu, has appealed to government to urgently address the growing concerns of cocoa farmers across the country, warning that continued neglect could trigger mass demonstrations.
According to him, cocoa farmers have not received payment for their produce for more than three months, a situation he described as deeply worrying and unsustainable. Nana Oboadie stressed that farmers do not take delight in embarking on demonstrations but may be left with no option if government fails to provide a lasting solution to the challenges confronting the cocoa sector.
Speaking on the Bryt Adekyee Musem Morning Show with host Kwamina Sam Biney, the Association President outlined the numerous difficulties cocoa farmers have been grappling with over the past three months. He explained that the prolonged delay in payments has placed severe financial strain on farmers, making it difficult for them to cater for their families, maintain their farms, and prepare adequately for the next farming season.
Nana Oboadie further noted that cocoa farming remains the main source of livelihood for many households, and the government’s inability to ensure timely payment is gradually eroding farmers’ confidence in the sector. He cautioned that if immediate steps are not taken to resolve the payment challenges and implement long-term reforms, unrest among farmers could escalate.
He therefore called on the relevant authorities to act swiftly to protect the welfare of cocoa farmers and safeguard the future of the cocoa industry, which remains a critical contributor to Ghana’s economy.
