Baba Jamal Ahmed Mohammed, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the impending Ayawaso East by-election, has made it clear that his motivation for running for office is solely to serve people and make a significant contribution to the constituency’s growth.
In response to critiques and accusations that cast doubt on his motivations, Baba Jamal denied that he is materialistic or greedy, stating that neither financial gain nor personal profit had any bearing on his decision to run for parliament.
He claims that his track record in public service demonstrates a lifelong dedication to helping others over accumulating fortune.
The former High Commissioner to Nigeria clarified that his current and prior roles offered significantly more financial incentives than what a Member of Parliament is eligible for, despite claims that he is running for the job for material gain.
He emphasized that it is irrational to claim that he is driven by money because his terms of service as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria were far more lucrative than those of an MP.
“My condition of service [as a high commissioner] is three times that of an MP, but I have decided to leave all and come and serve my people, so the question everybody should ask is, what is your motivation? My brothers and sisters, I am not motivated by material things. I am motivated by human service. I am not materialistic.
“Look at all these lageese. Every day I spend out there, I am giving $547. My telephone allowance is $600. At the end of the month, all that I buy from my $12,000 is food. And so I won’t even spend $1,000 on my food.”
He urged the residents of Ayawaso East to put more emphasis on his background, experience, and goals for the community than on what he said were attempts by opponents to distort his goals.
Baba Jamal clarified that his objective is to use his background in public administration, diplomacy, and governance to address issues that the locals face, such as social development, infrastructure deficiencies, and young unemployment.
In addition, the NDC parliamentary candidate reiterated his dedication to inclusive leadership and people-centered development, saying that if elected, he will collaborate closely with women, youth organizations, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders to further the constituency’s interests.
As a crucial stage in the run-up to the Ayawaso East by-election, Baba Jamal is anticipated to formally submit his nomination today at the Electoral Commission’s Greater Accra Regional Office.
