Kwami Edem Senanu, Co-Chair of the Citizens Movement Against Corruption and Chairperson of the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption, has called for heightened transparency and sustained public vigilance in the implementation of the government’s anti-corruption initiative, Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL).
Speaking in an interview with Kwamina Sam Biney on Bryt Adekyee Musem morning show, Mr Senanu cautioned against dismissing recurring allegations that some individuals under investigation may be negotiating plea bargain arrangements.
According to the anti-corruption advocate, the persistence of such claims from political actors should not be ignored, but rather subjected to careful scrutiny.
While acknowledging that senior officials may publicly deny wrongdoing, he noted that irregularities could still occur at lower levels of the investigative process, stressing the need for continuous oversight and accountability.
Mr Senanu emphasised that the credibility and success of the ORAL initiative would depend largely on transparency, urging stakeholders and the public to “keep an eye on the space” to ensure the programme fulfils its mandate.
He also underscored the vital role of citizens in combating corruption, stating that Ghanaians have a constitutional responsibility to report suspected cases of misappropriation of public funds.
Defending the legitimacy of the ORAL committee, Mr Senanu argued that the body’s work does not necessarily require explicit constitutional backing, particularly as it is grounded in civic participation and public reporting.
Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) is a government-led initiative aimed at investigating corruption-related offences, recovering misappropriated state assets, and prosecuting individuals found culpable.
Mr Senanu’s remarks reflect cautious support for the initiative, endorsing its anti-corruption objectives while warning that inadequate transparency and weak independent scrutiny could undermine public confidence in the process.
