Former Ghana international Yaw Acheampong Joachim says the Black Stars are showing signs of improved tactical discipline under new head coach Carlos Queiroz as the team steps up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United assistant coach replaced Otto Addo in March 2026 and has so far overseen just one match in charge, a 1-1 draw against Wales.
Speaking about Ghana’s build-up to the World Cup, the former Medeama coach stressed that the team is beginning to show greater tactical organisation under the Portuguese tactician.
“Our preparations haven’t been bad. Honestly, I’m impressed with the players’ discipline. Before Carlos Queiroz’s appointment, the team played more individualistic football, but in our last game against Wales, you could see real tactical discipline. The players followed instructions well. It wasn’t just about the result, but about how the coach wants the team to function,” he told Koforidua-based Swiit FM in an interview.
“From that match, his approach was clearly based on a low block and quick transitions, and to succeed with that style you need a lot of discipline — which we are starting to see. I saw a lot of positives in our last friendly against Wales,” he added.
Ghana are set to make their fifth World Cup appearance after securing qualification for the expanded tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The West African giants have been drawn in Group L alongside England, 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia, and Panama. Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama before facing England and Croatia.
The Black Stars have already arrived in the United States as preparations intensify for the tournament, which kicks off on June 11, 2026.
Ghana have previously featured at the World Cup in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022, with their best performance coming in 2010 when they reached the quarterfinals.
