The New Juaben South Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region is planning to install CCTV cameras to monitor streetlights and traffic signals following persistent cable and control board thefts across the municipality.
According to the MCE for New Juaben South, Hon.Ransford Owusu Boakye, the Assembly has already spent GH¢255,000 to replace copper cables stolen from streetlights, particularly along the Koforidua Polytechnic Traffic–Kasadjan Highway, while an additional GH¢40,000 is needed to replace a traffic light control board stolen by unknown persons.
He said the theft of copper cables left several roads in darkness for a long period, creating security and safety concerns for residents and motorists.
“Some individuals cut off and removed all the copper wires from the streetlights, which is why the lights were off for a long time. The Assembly spent GH¢255,000 to rectify the situation and restore power to the streetlights on the Poly and Kasadjan roads, lighting up the streets once again,” he stated.
Hon. Owusu Boakye further revealed that an electrical transformer powering some of the streetlights had also been vandalized, with cables stolen from the facility.
Describing the situation as worrying, the MCE said the Assembly intends to engage consultants and install CCTV cameras at strategic locations to monitor the infrastructure and help identify and prosecute perpetrators.
“Very bad, it is very bad. We even intend engaging some consultants. We want to install CCTV cameras so that in case somebody goes there to steal, because we have the cameras around, they will be captured and then the necessary sanctions are meted out to the person,” he said.
