The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) aspiring national chairman, Awentami Paul Afoko, has stated that he is confident the party can win the general election in 2028 if it stays cohesive and gives voters a strong message.
He claims that President John Dramani Mahama, who has been a significant figure on Ghana’s presidential ballot for multiple election cycles, will not be able to run again, giving the NPP a distinct edge going into the next election.
According to Mr. Afoko, this offers the party a chance to successfully promote Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, its 2024 presidential candidate, whom he characterized as a seasoned and powerful political figure.
“Voters already know him. He is battle-tested and ready to lead,” Mr Afoko said.
He insisted that if the NPP tackles the 2028 election with resolve, discipline, and unity, it can duplicate its electoral victory from 2016, when it overthrew an established government.
Mr. Afoko emphasized that internal coherence will be crucial to the party’s prospects during separate meetings with regional executives, sponsors, and party elders in the Volta, Oti, and Eastern regions.
“For the first time, we have a unique opportunity. When I introduced the New Plan for Power, we knew the sitting president could seek another term, and if he won, we would remain in opposition for 12 years. We therefore had to put a plan in place to return to power, and we succeeded,” he said.
“This time, he will not be on the ballot paper, and that presents us with another unique opportunity. But without unity, we will not get there.”
Mr. Afoko asked members to set aside personal concerns in order to pursue the group objective of reclaiming power and emphasized that unity within the party was non-negotiable.
“As for unity, it is not negotiable. You cannot sit beside a colleague and decide you do not like that person and therefore cannot work together. We are working together for power, and if we allow emotions to get in the way, we will lose,” he stated.
