The Director of Communications for the United Party, Solomon Owusu, has called for greater transparency following the resignation of former Chief Justice Sophia Akufo from the Council of State, describing the development as one that warrants public scrutiny and national reflection.
Speaking on Bryt Adekyee Musem on Bryt FM with Kwamina Sam Biney, Mr. Owusu said Justice Akufo’s decision to step down from the advisory body raises important questions about the functioning, credibility, and independence of key state institutions.
According to him, the Council of State plays a vital role in advising the President on matters of governance and national development, making the resignation of a prominent member such as Sophia Akufo a matter of significant public interest.
He urged authorities to provide Ghanaians with a clear explanation of the circumstances surrounding her departure, stressing that transparency and accountability are essential to maintaining public trust in democratic institutions.
“Given her distinguished career and immense contribution to public service, Ghanaians deserve to know what informed her decision to resign,” Mr. Owusu stated.
He further emphasized the need for government to safeguard the integrity of state institutions, noting that public confidence in governance structures must remain a top priority.
The former Chief Justice, who served as a member of the Council of State, recently resigned from the constitutional advisory body. Although the reasons behind her resignation have not been officially disclosed, the development has generated widespread public debate and political commentary.
Mr. Owusu said the incident should serve as an opportunity for national reflection on leadership, accountability, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
He added that moments such as these underscore the importance of transparent governance and responsible leadership in sustaining Ghana’s democratic progress.
