Dr. Kobina Arthur Kennedy, a former NPP presidential candidate, has attributed the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election to the Nana Akufo-Addo administration’s subpar performance, contending that the party should address its record in government rather than concentrating on security issues.
In an interview with TV3 journalist Alfred Ocansey, he claimed that the NPP’s defeat was not due to a weak vigilante force but rather to voters’ discontent with the party’s eight years in power.
“The fact of the matter is that they didn’t have enough votes because they spent eight years governing badly and people were unhappy,” he said.
According to Dr. Arthur Kennedy, about 1.25 million NPP supporters chose to vote for John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, as proof of the party’s electoral issues.
He contended that rather than relying on increased security or vigilante action to retake power, the NPP should concentrate on winning back those voters.
“You think those people will come home because you have met your men? Of course not. They were voting for John Mahama,” he said.
Additionally, he cited public discontent with both main political parties and estimated that millions of eligible voters did not cast ballots as warning indicators that the NPP needs to take seriously.
Instead of promoting the previous administration’s success as a winning recipe for 2028, Dr Arthur Kennedy suggested that the party look at the choices and policies that led to its failure.
“The people knew the things that he did were what took us out of power. So, this idea that what he did will bring us back to power is neither here nor there,” he added.
