President of Trinity Theological Seminary, Rev. Prof. J. Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu has stated emphatically that the future of the country is in limbo if Ghanaians keep damaging the environment with its constant deforestation, illegal mining and among others.
He said the continuous destruction of the environment is self-inflicted and must be halted.
“When we destroy the environment we destroy ourselves. We rely on nature for our critical needs including medicine, food, air and water for free, yet we show signs of ungratefulness by destroying nature through activities such as deforestation, mining, air pollution and improper waste management,” he said.
He made this assertion during commencement lecture at the University of Environment and Sustainable development, Somanya in the Eastern Region, he reiterated the fact that Ghana has great agricultural potentials which could contribute significantly to feeding the citizenry if well developed.
The newly built University on Saturday, 23rd January 2021 held a commencement lecture to officially start the academic year, under the theme; Securing the environment-Our Challenge.
The University of Environment and Sustainable Development, Somanya (UESD), in Yilo Krobo- municipality of the Eastern Region has admitted 83 pioneering students and has commenced its academy work for the first time since its establishment
He said it is the sacred duty of all to take steps to protect and conserve the environment by growing trees, using water wisely and disposing of refuse especially plastics appropriately.
Prof. J. Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu is of the conviction that, the people of this country would continue to remain under the chains of poverty if the wanton destruction of the environment is not checked pronto.
While decrying the gravity of degradation of the environment, he said there was a fierce urgency to tackle the menace, adding that nature does not need humans but man needs nature to survive.
