The Millennium City Divisional Police Commander ACP Prince Wabu and his armed Police officers have been attacked by landgaurds at Gomoa Nyanyano in the Central region Wednesday, April 13, 2021.
The weapon-wielding land guards numbering about 500 from Kokrobitey outnumbered the security personnel led by the Police Commander forcing them to run away for their lives.
Sources say the police Commander and his men stormed the area in an attempt to arrest the landgaurds who were demolishing properties along the salt mining area in Kokrobitey but were chased out in a chaotic attack.
According to Bryt News Correspondent Eric Owusu Amponsah,” this salt business has been in existence for over 70 years and has created over 2000 jobs for the people of Nyanyano and Gomoa Dampase in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region. With this, some angry miners who were dress in red and black attire chanting war songs said if police couldn’t face these notorious land guards of which they were able to issue a threat to a whole divisional commander and his men, drove them away from the site, then they will face these land guards with their weapons if authorities fail to call them to order.”
The angry residents alleged that the land guards came to the area with Police officers and some National Security Personnel from the Greater Accra Region using state security vehicles with the Registration Numbers GP 4632, GN, 2996-20, BA, 2613-13 to demolish buildings claiming the area belongs to some faceless people in power.
The angry residents issued a week ultimatum to IGP and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo to intervene to avert bloody clashes.
The Gomoa East divisional Police Command is yet to comment on the matter.
Meanwhile, Chief of Gomoa Dampase Nene Oheme alleged that the land guards are backed by some top police officers.
He said IGP must call Greater Accra Regional Police Commander to order to withdraw his men from that operation for Central Region Police Command to take over since it falls under its jurisdiction.
Member of Parliament for Gomoa East Constituency, Hon Desmond De-Graft Paitoo also said the escalating tension at Gomoa Nyanyano and Dampase is a time bomb that requires urgent action.
Also, District Chief Executive, Hon Solomon Darko Quarm who doubles as the head of District Security Council said he has petitioned the Central Regional Police Command and Regional Minister to come on board to find a lasting solution to the boundary dispute breeding insecurity in the area.
