Reverend Father Paul Tordzro, Parish Priest of the Saint Mary’s Parish -Asamankese in the Diocese of Koforidua has described people campaigning for” No Vote” in the December 17th, 2019 Referendum as “Hypocrites”.
According to him, political parties are secretly behind most Aspirants in the District Level elections for some years now and wonder why some Ghanaians who know the truth are against the politicization of Assembly elections.
The priest said at Asamankese Catholic Church when Municipal Chief executive for West Akyem, Mr. Seth Oduro Boadu visited the congregation to educate them on the essence of the Referendum.
Reverend Father Paul Tordzro called on Ghanaians to participate in the 17th December Local government election to vote for their Assembly members and vote yes to pave the way to amend the 1992 Constitution to make the District Assembly election partisan.
The 2019 National Referendum is to enable citizens to vote on the proposed amendment of Article 55 (3) of the 1992 Constitution that currently bars political parties from participating in District Level Elections (DLEs).
The proposed amendment is to introduce multi-party participation in the Local Government system in Ghana.
This provision as entrenched in the constitution can only be amended if 40% of persons eligible to vote show up and 75% of the voters vote ‘YES’ in favor of the amendment.
A successful amendment of Article 55 (3) will make room for political parties to sponsor candidates for District Assemblies of Lower Local Government units.
