The National Identification Authority (NIA) mass registration exercise for Ghanaian citizens in the Eastern Region has taken off amidst some technical hitches at some registration centres within the region.
Some centres at Nkurakan, Somnaya and Adweso were not able to issue the cards to the various registrants but were told the cards will be ready for collection in the next seven days.
An inquiry into why the cards could not be printed revealed that the officer responsible for the operation of that machine was not available.
When Bryt News visited the Saint Dominic registration centres, the commissioner of oath responsible for taking the citizens who required vouching was also not available.
Several attempts to speak to the duty officers of the National Identification Authority officials at the various centres proved futile as they told the journalists that they were not permitted to talk to the press but can only grant access to observe the ongoing exercise.
Meanwhile, some centres such as Der Sallam, Ati Ahenfie, Kukurantumi Ahenbronu and Effiduase were not faced with any challenge as the exercise were going on smoothly.
The exercise which will last for three weeks is I being held simultaneously in 833 registration centres across all the municipalities in the Eastern Region.
