Ghana has recorded the second fatality in Covid-19 scourge whilst Health authorities have confirmed three new infections bringing the total number to twenty-seven (27).
The latest update by the Ghana Health Service stated that “as of 23 March 2020, 14:00 Hr. a total of 521 suspected cases have been tested for COVID-19 by Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) and Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR).”
It explained further that “Out of the suspected, twenty-seven (27) cases including two (2) deaths have been confirmed. All the twenty-five (25) confirmed cases are receiving treatment in isolation. Among the confirmed cases, twenty (20) are of Ghanaian nationality, the majority of whom returned home from affected countries. Seven (7) are of other nationals namely: Norway, Lebanon, China, France, UK.
“In respect of contact tracing, a total of 598 contacts have been identified and are being tracked. One (1) of the contacts developed symptoms and has been confirmed positive. Nineteen (19) people have completed the 14 days of mandatory follow up.”
Ghana recorded the first case of coronavirus on March 13, 2020.
Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo having suspended all social gatherings including Church activities and closed down schools since March 16, 2020, on Saturday, March 18, 2020, announced the closure of all borders – Land, Sea and Air space. Also, mandatory 14 days quarantine for all permitted travelers to Ghana as part of enhanced measures to control the spread of the disease.
Experts have suggested lockdown of the National Capital Accra and Ashanti Regional Capital -Kumasi to help control the spread of the disease.
