The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akuapem South constituency, Eastern Region, is grappling with confusion as speculation arises about the rescheduling of the suspended parliamentary primary to Saturday, February 3, 2024.
Delegates express concerns, citing the earlier suspension communicated through a public press release by the National leadership, while rumors of rescheduling circulate at the Regional Secretariat.
In response to this uncertainty, delegates are urging the national leadership to issue an official statement, seeking clarity and confirmation regarding the parliamentary primary date.
Their call reflects a desire for transparent communication to address the ongoing confusion within the Akuapem South NPP.
The NPP officially announced the postponement of the Akuapem South election on Thursday, January 25, 2023, influenced by petitions and recommendations from both constituency and regional executive committees.
This decision aims to facilitate comprehensive consultation and address concerns arising from the withdrawal of Osei Bonsu Amoah, the Member of Parliament for Akuapem South Constituency.
Following the announcement, the Eastern Regional Chairman of NPP imposed a temporary ban on all political activities in the Akuapem South Constituency until Monday, January 29, 2023.
Osei Bonsu Amoah cited personal and national interests in his withdrawal, emphasizing adherence to Public Elections Regulations 2016, C.I.94.
Contrary to earlier reports suggesting Amoah’s intent to ensure the disqualification of MCE Frank Aidoo, who filed with a condition dependent on Amoah’s withdrawal, Amoah refuted claims of stepping down to support his former aide Eric Yeboah Apeadu.
With Amoah’s withdrawal, contenders Eric Apeadu Yeboah, Kwame Ofori Gyawu, and Samuel Annor Mensah fiercely compete for the seat held by Amoah for four consecutive terms.
Party delegates and some traditional rulers advocate for the disqualified MCE’s inclusion in the contest, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and inclusive decision-making process.
