Vigilant residents of Akwadum a suburb of New Juaben North Municipality of the Eastern Region last night arrested nine (9) persons from Benin who arrived in the community under cover.
The Benin nationals -all males were handed over to the Akwadum Police for interrogation but could not provide a tangible explanation to the Police their mission in the community.
The incident occurred Saturday evening around 9:30pm. The action of the youth was taken to reinforce the fight against coronavirus pandemic.
Some of the youth in the community kept vigil at the Police station last night to ensure that the Benin nationals do not escape from Police Custody.
Yaw Owusu one of the youth told mybrytfmonline.com that “yesterday around 10:00pm, we saw some passengers alighting from a Fish type of vehicle with their noses covered. We noticed they were strangers so started to interrogate them but they couldn’t even speak our local languages neither English so we surrounded them even as some tried to escape, and we informed the Local Police who came for them to the Police station.”
He added “so since last night we all didn’t sleep. We kept watching them at the Police station so that they will not escape while we were there some Benin nationals who are already in the community engaging in laborer work came around to speak to them and left”
According to Yaw Owusu, the Effiduase District Police Command has been informed about the development and is expected to come to the Akwadum Police station this morning to pick the suspects for further investigations.
Ghana has closed all Borders -Land, sea and Air space following the outbreak of Coronavirus disease in the country. The government also imposed mandatory 14 days quarantine for returnees in the country.
Subsequently, President of Ghana Akufo-Addo on March 27, 2020, announced a partial lockdown of the Nation’s Capital-Accra and Parts of Greater Kumasi for two weeks which has recently been extended by a week part of enhanced measure to prevent increasing community spread.
Ghana Health Service announced that as of 10 April 2020, 11:00 hours, a total of 27,346 persons have been tested with 408 being positive for COVID-19. The breakdown of the 408 positive cases are as follows: four (4) have been treated, discharged and have tested negative, 394 cases have been categorized as mild disease on treatment, two (2) moderate to severe cases, none currently on ventilators and eight (8) have died.
Out of the 408 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 205 were reported from the routine surveillance, 88 from enhanced surveillance activities and 115 from travelers under mandatory quarantine in both Accra and Tamale.
Regions that have reported cases are Greater Accra, Ashanti, Central, Eastern, Northern, North East, Upper East, and Upper West regions.
