The Eastern Regional Women’s Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Shirley Naana Osei Ampem, has commended the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, for his pledge to establish a state-of-the-art Fertility Center in Accra if elected in the 2024 Presidential election.
Mahama made this commitment during the launch of the NDC’s manifesto on August 24, 2024.
The proposed Fertility Center aims to address the growing issue of infertility in Ghana, a condition that affects both men and women but disproportionately stigmatizes women, often leading to severe marital and social challenges.
Speaking in an interview with the media, Shirley Naana Osei Ampem emphasized the emotional and psychological toll infertility takes on affected individuals, particularly women. “This intervention is very timely and laudable. It offers relief for many couples struggling with infertility and the societal stigma associated with it,” she said. She added that the initiative would significantly contribute to bringing “peace to homes.”
The NDC manifesto, which also includes proposals such as the creation of a Women’s Bank and the introduction of quotas for women in governance, was highlighted by Osei Ampem as evidence of Mahama and his running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s commitment to addressing gender-based issues.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), infertility affects one in six people globally, with 17.5% of the adult population likely to experience it at some point in their lives. The WHO has called for improved policies and public financing to make fertility treatments more accessible, particularly in low and middle-income countries.
The proposed Fertility Center aligns with these recommendations, potentially making Ghana one of the few countries in the region to offer state-funded fertility care.
