The Majority in Parliament has issued a stern warning to the Minority caucus, asserting that they will remain in opposition for an extended period.
This declaration stems from the Majority’s perception of the Akufo-Addo government’s subpar performance.
Despite being in office for merely two months, the current government is being criticized for failing to address the economic challenges inherited from the previous administration, which continue to plague Ghanaians.
During a heated debate on President Mahama’s State of the Nation Address, Deputy Majority Leader Kweku Ricketts-Hagan launched a scathing attack on the Akufo-Addo government’s borrowing practices, which he believes have exacerbated economic hardship.
Ricketts-Hagan’s remarks were laced with incredulity, as he quoted President Akufo-Addo’s recent State of the Nation address, where he cautioned against defaulting on debts.
Ricketts-Hagan found this advice laughable, given President Akufo-Addo’s own track record of “overborrowing” and unilateral decisions to suspend debt payments and interest payments since 2022.
Ricketts-Hagan’s retort was biting: “You have found your voices early, and you have to take your time. Ghanaians have not forgotten. You will be in opposition for a very long time.” This statement served as a stark reminder to the Minority caucus that their criticisms would not be taken lightly, and that the Majority remains committed to addressing the nation’s economic woes.
